Shelby EcoBoost Mustang

Shelby American is expanding its vehicle lineup for global customers by offering a Shelby GT version of the popular EcoBoost model 2015-2016 Ford Mustang. “Ever since Ford announced that its terrific new Mustang would be available worldwide, requests for Shelby versions of the car have rolled in from across the globe,” said Joe Conway, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International and CEO of Shelby American. “Since the majority of Mustangs that Ford offers in many of those countries will be the EcoBoost model, our team has been developing a Shelby GT model for the nimble new turbocharged four-cylinder car, as well as the V-8 powered GT. This package was specifically developed for the recently announced network of Shelby Mod Shops that will stretch from Europe to South Africa, China and Australia. They will add the Shelby package to a Ford Mustang that a customer has purchased in that area.”
Like the manual and automatic transmission 5.0 liter model Shelby GT, the EcoBoost version of the car is far more than stripes and a badge. Shelby American spent significant time developing the car, putting it through extensive testing on the track. The car was refined with a Ford Performance handling pack upgrade, engine tune and a throatier Ford Performance exhaust. The result is over 335 horsepower on 91 octane fuel and significantly better handling.
“Shelby American has delivered a car that not only provides superior handling, it has smooth progressive power and great braking capabilities,” said Vince LaViolette, SAI lead designer and factory test driver. “Yet it doesn’t negate the EcoBoost’s outstanding fuel economy. And the car offers the aggressive styling of the new Shelby GT that enthusiasts demand.”
The $23,995 starting price (not including the base EcoBoost Mustang) includes performance upgrades to the suspension, at least 20 more horsepower, a new exhaust, bigger wheels and tires.  Aesthetically, the car will also share some of the treatments from the V8 version of the Shelby GT including a carbon fiber front splitter, hood, rear spoiler and rocker panel. A list of additional performance options are also available including even more aggressive brakes, stronger half shafts, more cooling, brake ducts, etc.
“The Shelby GT EcoBoost is designed to appeal to a new Shelby enthusiast audience,” said Gary Schechner, Shelby American Vice President Marketing and Sales. “While we believe that Americans will embrace the car, we expect significant demand from this platform internationally where the availability of the V-8 Mustang GT may be more limited or taxes and tariffs might prevent ownership of the V-8 engine.”

Harman Kardon Gets Into Multi-Room Audio at CES 2016 With Omni+ Speakers

Not that multi-room audio is a new thing, but 2016 is the year when the concept of multiple connected speakers is set to take off. While a slew of manufacturers including Sonos, Bose, and Sony already have product lineups to take the segment on, others such as Harman Kardon are just getting into the act.
Speaking of which, the American audio specialist company has announced its new Omni+ range of products, which includes the Omni 10+, Omni 20+ and Omni 50+ speakers, the OmniBar+ soundbar and the Adapt+ accessory which can be used to give your older speakers multi-room connectivity. All of the above can handle high-res audio with support for up to 24-bit/192kHz files, and can stream using Google Cast or Spotify Connect. In addition, the Omni 50+ can be used outdoors, thanks to some basic splash resistance. Multi-room connectivity is controlled using a dedicated companion app.
All of the speakers have plenty of connectivity options, with 5G Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and auxiliary inputs all supported. AirPlay is missing from the list, but this shouldn't be too much of a problem considering the companion app can use Wi-Fi to stream audio.
Harman Kardon has also made it easier to pair multiple products together to create a 3.1 or 5.1 wireless surround sound setup, by connecting two or more speakers to the OmniBar+. Typical multi-room connectivity uses the companion app, and can be set up to play either the same track in multiple rooms, or different tracks in different rooms, by using multiple speakers connected via your home Wi-Fi network.
All of the new speakers have just been launched at CES 2016, and are expected to launch globally in the first half of 2016, with pricing ranging from $199 for the Omni 10+ to $999 for the OmniBar+. India-specific availability and pricing information is yet to be made available, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we find out.

Twitter considering 10,000-character limit for tweets: Report

Twitter Inc is building a new feature that will allow users to post tweets as long as 10,000 characters, well beyond its current 140-character limit, technology news website Re/code reported on Tuesday.
An expansion of the limit to 10,000 characters would allow a tweet of more than 1,000 words with spaces between words and punctuation. For comparison, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was 272 words, and President John F. Kennedy's inaugural speech was 1,366 words.
Twitter may launch the service towards the end of the first quarter but has not set an official date, Re/code said, citing sources familiar with the plans. They said the character limit could change before the final version of the product is unveiled.
Jack Dorsey, the company's co-founder, who returned as chief executive in October, in a series of tweets did not say whether Twitter would expand the limit. But he did call it "a beautiful constraint."
He added that the company has seen more people sharing screenshots of text, which are a way to get around the 140-character limit.
"We're not going to be shy about building more utility and power into Twitter for people," Dorsey wrote in a screenshot of text that was longer than 140 characters.
"As long as it's consistent with what people want to do, we're going to explore it."
The micro-blogging website, in an attempt to keep the current look for the Twitter timeline, is testing a version of the product that displays 140-character tweets but expands to reveal more content when users click on the tweet, Re/code said.
Twitter has been experimenting under Dorsey to make the service more engaging.
In the few months since Dorsey returned, Twitter introduced the 'Moments' feature, added polls to tweets, rolled out a "buy" button and replaced its star-shaped "favourite" icon with a heart-shaped icon called "like."
Twitter has come under increasing pressure to boost user growth and ad revenue. It had its slowest user growth in 2015 - it now boasts just over 300 million users - and was eclipsed by photo-sharing app Instagram, owned by Facebook Inc (FB.O), which surpassed 400 million users last year.
On Tuesday, however, some users took to Twitter to express their opposition to the possible longer tweet with the hashtag #beyond140.
"Just say no to #beyond140!," Andrew Wright tweeted.
Re/code reported in September that the new feature was in the works.
Twitter declined to comment.

MediaTek MT2523 Series of Chipsets Launched for Smartwatches

MediaTek in an attempt to increase the adoption of its chipsets in the wearable segment has launched a new wearable-focused chipset on Monday. The MediaTek MT2523 is said to be designed for activity trackers and fitness-focused smartwatches.
The Taiwan-based chipmaker also claimed that the new chipset is the "world's first system-in-package (SiP)" that offers features such as GPS and dual-mode Bluetooth Low Energy. The chipset is also said to support MIPI high-resolution mobile screen. It bears a Cortex-M4 processor onboard.
The company says that the new SiP has been printed on a circuit board area that is 41 percent smaller than other chipsets designed for wearables. Another notable highlight suggested by MediaTek is that the devices powered by MT2523 can last more than a week on single charge. We however will have to wait for the devices that pack the new MediaTek MT2523 SoC to check the battery life. The SiP also packs a micro controller unit (MCU), and a power management unit (PMU). MediaTek expects that the new SiP will be available to wearable makers starting the first half of 2016.
Announcing the new chipset, JC Hsu, MediaTek's corporate vice president and general manager of IoT business unit said, "The MT2523, with its combination low power and rich features, marks a significant step forward for the smart watch and wristband industries. Power combined with efficiency has always been the hallmark of MediaTek technology solutions and we are leading the charge in bringing this know-how to IoT products."
mediatek_mt8581_soc.jpg
Apart from the MT2523 SoC, MediaTek announced the MT8581 system-on-chip designed for Ultra High Definition (4K) Blu-ray players. The company expects mass production for the MT8581 to start in the second half of 2016. The Taiwanese company also announced the MT7697 SoC focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) in the home applications such as home appliances, home automation, and smart gadgets. MediaTek says that MT7697 will be available in the first half of 2016.

Bentley cars to offer stone interior veneers

This innovative interior finish utilises state-of-the-art stone veneer technology to make a luxurious, contemporary feature of a natural product formed over 200 million years.
The slate and quartzite stone is sustainably sourced from hand-selected quarries in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, India - a nation with an ancient and rich culture of stone masonry. The sections of stone are split from larger pieces and cured using glass fibre and a bespoke resin. Finally, they are shaped and hand finished by Bentley's world-renowned Mulliner coach building team at the company's headquarters in Crewe, England.
Bentley cars to offer stone interior veneers

Mulliner is now offering Stone Veneers in a natural finish, in four different colours on Continental and Flying Spur: Galaxy, Autumn White, Terra Red and Copper.

The stone surfaces of the veneers are just 0.1 mm thick, meaning that they are both extremely light and translucent, allowing the elegant grain and pattern in the stone to be visible to the interior occupants.
Geoff Dowding, Director of Mulliner Operations, comments: "Bentley is the established expert in the handcrafting of wood and leather, and now we are exploring new, fine and rare materials to offer even more bespoke tailoring and choice to our customers. Stone veneers are another first for Bentley - but only the beginning of what we plan to do with this luxurious and unique material."
Mulliner is now offering Stone Veneers in a natural finish, in four different colours on Continental and Flying Spur: Galaxy, Autumn White, Terra Red and Copper. As with any bespoke feature, customers that are interested in Stone Veneers can get in touch with Mulliner's bespoke team who will work with each individual to discuss their unique requirements.

Tata Motors puts its best foot forward with the Zica

Team effort: Tata Motors' Mayank Pareek, Pratap Bose, Dr Tim Leverton and Girish Wagh with the Zica which is to be launched on January 20.
It was in June 2013 that Tata Motors announced its Horizonext strategy to turn around its struggling passenger vehicle business. Two-and-a-half years later, the first fully new product in the form of the Zica is ready to hit the market.
zica-web
The work on the Zica (project name Kite) began in 2012. Look closely and you soon realise Tata Motors has taken a completely new design approach. Design head Pratap Bose says the Zica marks the beginning of a new design philosophy. The car has a sculpted look with sharp lines that run around the body and a redesigned three-dimensional Tata logo. Though design appeal is subjective, it is likely that most people would rate the Zica as better designed than previous Tata cars. It is the first Tata car which has been fully designed in-house with inputs from the company’s design centres in Pune, UK and Italy. The interior has an understated, premium feel. No beige here. The Zica gets a black-and-grey dual-tone dashboard. The quality of the plastics, some of which are textured, is quite good.
On the fit and finish parameter too, Tata Motors has evolved significantly. Girish Wagh, Tata Motors’ senior VP, says this is because all components have undergone stringent tests for environmental ageing, perceived quality and BSM (buzz, squeak and rattle). Like many other new models, the Zica offers multiple storage spaces (22). It offers a 240-litre boot space with hooks on either side to carry small shopping bags (up to 3kg).
New ‘future-proof’ engine strategyAlong with its design, the engine options are the highlights of the Zica. A set of new engines – a 1.05-litre 69.4bhp diesel branded as ‘Revotorq’ and a 1.2-litre 83.83bhp petrol in the ‘Revotron’ series will power the compact car. These are also the first set of three-cylinder engines from Tata Motors and reflect the carmaker’s powertrain downsizing strategy to offer better fuel efficiency and meet future emission norms. The new engine architecture is capable of meeting BS VI norms “and beyond”.
engines-web-3
The naturally aspirated petrol engine is the first from Tata to have a variable cam timing technology. Tata Motors says that it has used a low-weight crankcase set-up and a variable oil pump to deliver ‘higher fuel efficiency’.  Tata Motors has not disclosed the fuel efficiency figures but it is learnt that the engine may deliver 6-7 percent better fuel efficiency over Zica’s competitors.
The diesel engine promises the highest torque in the segment with a figure of 140 Nm at 1800-3000rpm. The engine comes with a turbocharger, electronic throttle control and optimised compression ratio aimed at flat torque delivery and better driveability. A balancer shaft (not there in the petrol engine) is used to reduce engine vibrations. Along with fuel efficiency, Tata engineers have worked on improving life of the timing belt, auxiliary belt and extend intervals for oil and fuel filter change to offer low cost of ownership.
After driving both cars, it is clear that the engineers have done a good job in the area of ride and handling with the use of dual path suspension. However, more insulation from the noise and vibration, typical of a three-cylinder engine, would have made the drive more enjoyable. Like the Zest and Bolt, the Zica also offers multi-drive modes. It offers two modes (City and Eco), instead of three in the other cars.
The Zica is 3746mm long and 1647mm wide with a wheelbase of 2400mm. The track at the rear is extended to the maximum to give the car a sporty stance. The rear fenders have been pinched out a bit to cover the wheels as mandatory under regulations. Small ‘winglets’ have been added on both sides of the spoiler to enhance air flow around the car.
A team of up to 250 engineers worked on the Zica project. The access to technology at Jaguar Land Rover also helped, especially to improve perceived quality, surface finish and validation of the car. The Zica is also the first Tata car to be validated digitally to a great extent. “Around 60-65 percent of the product is validated digitally before we built the prototype. It pays off massively in terms of the focus you can bring in the quality of the way the car comes together,” Dr Timothy Leverton, president and head, advanced and product engineering, Tata Motors, told Autocar Professional.
The Zica, which is set to be launched on January 20, 2016, comes equipped with safety features like driver and front passenger airbags, speed-sensing door locks and an engine immobiliser, plus ABS and EBD.
Another highlight is its infotainment system. Audi equipment maker Harman’s association with Tata Motors extends to this hatchback, where it has fitted a system with four speakers and four tweeters. Under Tata’s ConnectNext approach, the Zica offers turn-by-turn navigation when connected to a smartphone through Bluetooth. A ‘Juke-Car’ app enables all occupants of the car to add songs in the playlist for the car’s system to play.
After spending a few hours with the Zica, one can say that Tata Motors has put in its best efforts to build a capable car that will have the responsibility to play a key role to change the company’s fortune in the car market. Now it depends on the Zica’s variants and pricing strategy as well as the aftersales support that will determine its appeal to customers.

Q&A: MAYANK PAREEK, PRESIDENT – PASSENGER VEHICLES BUSINESS UNIT,  TATA MOTORS
The Zica starts a new direction for Tata Motors, doesn’t it?With the Zica we are demonstrating our audacity of hope, what we’re capable of. Zica is a completely new platform with two completely new powertrains, which will be our future powertrains.
It is a departure from our design philosophy to become more contemporary and it is also a car that’s extremely feature-loaded. This is a fresh beginning.
What steps are you taking to ensure that Tata cars’ brand equity improves?Since January, I’ve been meeting customers to understand two things — ‘What the customer thinks Tata Motors is’, and ‘What they it want it to be’. People associate Tata with trust and pioneering. What they also want it to be is that it should become ‘cool’. That has been our endeavour. People said that a ‘cool’ person/brand is very accomplished, very confident (from within) but also humble. They are generally underdogs, but they turn it around. This is what people said build into Tata Motors.
Then we came to the conclusion that we need a celebrity to really catch up on time. Surprisingly, people don’t find cricket cool but it is popular as with Bollywood, where every Friday, coolness changes. Soccer is the new cool, which is something we corroborated with the data.
When we looked around, Lionel Messi fitted the bill to the T. He is a person who was born into a very humble family, with limited means, but he overcame all that by sheer hard work and commitment. And, in this success, he’s never left his humility. So we started the ‘Made of Great’ campaign.
Similarly, we have gone through adverse times but know that we have the wherewithal within ourselves and that we can do it. But it is a long-term process.
Some earlier high-profile celebrity associations like Amitabh Bachchan-Maruti Versa, Sachin Tendulkar-Fiat Palio didn’t click. What gives you the confidence? What a celebrity does, by the power of association of your product with that brand, is that he brings you into the consideration set. He drives people to the showroom. After that, if your product doesn’t meet that promise, then nothing can be done. The customer is the most intelligent person and he reads through what you’re saying.
The customer should feel reassured because a car is one of the biggest investments in life. Luckily, we have the Tata brand name that people trust. We have to justify that trust.
In terms of the market performance, do you see the curve going up?Certainly. Even this year, despite having no completely new model, between April-September, we grew by 14 percent while the industry grew by 6.8 percent. November was bad but that’s a hiccup. Now when the Zica comes, every vehicle I sell will be incremental. I guess we will be outperforming the industry this year.
Why didn’t the Bolt receive a good response? We knew that this is a very good product but it has a very strong linkage to earlier ones. Perhaps, the customer wanted a new product. But it was our preparation for the Zica and the future products. The good news is that we witnessed a huge increase in showroom footfalls.
Secondly, this was also to see whether people accept a petrol engine, introduced by us after a long time. It felt nice to know that 60-odd percent Bolt buyers bought the petrol variant. While I wish the numbers were better, our learnings with the Bolt will reflect in the Zica.

Google, Lenovo to Unveil Project Tango Devices at CES 2016: Report

We've been hearing about Google's Project Tango for over a year now, and according to a report, it is finally coming to fruition, with a major PC manufacturer looking to use the technology.
Google and Lenovo have shared a teaser (via Android Headlines) for a Thursday announcement, with the words, "Mobile devices should see and navigate the world, the way we do. Join Lenovo & Google's Project Tango for a special announcement..." According to a report by ComputerWorld, a product line using Project Tango is likely to be announced at CES 2016 by Lenovo, including a consumer-facing product.
To recall, Lenovo in late 2014 acquired Motorola Mobility from Google, though the Internet giantretained the mobile firm's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group.
Not much is known about the Project Tango devices Lenovo reportedly intends to launch at CES 2016, but applications of machine vision in mobile devices can be expected.
Project Tango is an imaging technology that uses a combination of various sensors to "see" the environment around you and generate spatial awareness for your phone. Developed by a team led by former Kinect lead Johnny Lee, Tango was created by Google's Advanced Technology And Projects group, and uses a number of different sensors on your phone or tablet to create a sophisticated picture of the world around it.
An infrared emitter and infrared camera act as a range-finder to measure the distance between your phone and various objects, allowing them to be mapped in three dimensions. A wide angle camera adds details about the location, and other phone sensors including accelerometers, gyroscopes, and barometers combine to help Tango calculate not just what is around your phone or tablet, but also the angle at which you are looking at an object, how far away it is, and what it looks like.
This level of detail is an incredible technical feat, and Tango could have many applications for users. And developers won't have to work on it from the ground up, as Google has APIs to allow them to use data from Tango.
There are multiple APIs that developers can use, which could see Tango getting integrated into a wide variety of apps, just as other sensors on your phone get used in different ways. For one thing, you could now have apps that can easily measure the dimensions of an object - once you know an object's distance from the camera, basic geometry can be used to figure out the rest.
Capturing 3D images using the depth sensor is another possibility - right now there are plenty of apps that allow you to take two images side by side with a slightly shifted perspective, but of course, that only provides the illusion of depth. Tango could make it possible to scan your entire room and have your furniture stand out in the virtual environment, leaving you free to roam around it.
Imagine combining that with a cheap headset like Google Cardboard to showcase homes to prospective buyers. Real estate companies in India are already doing this with 2D photos, and investing in expensive 3D photography solutions that can cost close to a lakh. Project Tango can bring the technology into the cellphone in your pocket, if it catches on.
The growing interest in Virtual Reality and Augmented reality shows just how Project Tango could mature. We already have apps such as "smart" books for children that come alive when viewed through a screen. This could become far more powerful with Project Tango, as you would be able to explore this virtual world and view it from different angles, using the other sensors on your phone as a guide.

Project Tango partners include Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Intel. Only MediaTek is missing from this list, and if the first few Tango devices can deliver on their promise, then that won't be the case for long either. It's very likely that in the next year or so, the technology behind Tango is going to become as common as having a gyroscope on your phone.

Letv launches VR headset and Internet-enabled bicycle in India

The company has solidly beaten out all competitors in the Indian VR market, well before any of them have even made an entrance.
Following the launch of their curved-display smart TV in December, Chinese electronics manufacturer Letv has been promising a slew of new products this month. And while earlier rumours suggested we'd be seeing a new line of smartphones today, we've instead got a few new from completely left field. Arguably, they might even be better news than more phones.

At their launch event in New Delhi, Letv had three new products to unveil, the first of which is the Le 3D Helmet. While it may sound like HUD-based driving headgear, it's actually an all new virtual reality display. The 3D Helmet has a 5.5-inch 2K LCD display from Sharp, with a horizontal 70-inch field of view. Built with a focus on moviegoers, Letv says it "feels like you’re 15 meters away, sitting in the 8th row of a cinema". While not much else was revealed at the launch, the 3D Helmet is clearly drawing inspiration from the still to arrive Samsung Gear VR, but with support for all of Letv's Superphone models.

Next up is the LeMe Bluetooth headset, wireless headphones available in White, Pink Orange ,and Red, The headset feature a seamless teardrop design and are lightweight, though they don't fold away like most other wireless headsets we're used to.

And last, but not least, is a first of its kind product, the Super Cycle. Letv i quick to say this isn't just your average bicycle, "it’s an Internet-enabled, self-powered transport system". The cycle is an IoT machine at heart, with the Super Cycle OS loaded onto the processor in your handlebars. It offers cloud computing, app integration, intelligent anti-theft and even a voice communication feature to keep in touch with fellow cyclists along the way.

The Super Cycle launch is definitely the most zany of the three, but we can definitely see its appeal, especially in metropolitan areas. Traffic, growing health awareness, and a willingness to try anything IoT-related should show at least respectable sales numbers for a first time product, pending the announcement of a sane price point of course. But, more importantly, it seems Letv has beaten every other competitor to the punch, as far as Virtual Reality is concerned. It may look exactly like the Samsung's Gear VR but, seeing as Letv's phones are a hell of a lot cheaper, the 3D Helmet might actually be more popular in India.

Ford partners with Amazon to connect cars with homes

LAS VEGAS — Ford announced Monday at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show that it is working with Amazon and Internet of Things platform Wink toward granting Ford owners unprecedented access to their connected-home devices from their cars, and vice versa.
LAS VEGAS — Ford announced Monday at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show that it is working with Amazon and Internet of Things platform Wink toward granting Ford owners unprecedented access to their connected-home devices from their cars, and vice versa.
The idea is that a Ford automobile owner will soon be able to use the vehicle's Sync Connect system to use touch or voice commands to open a garage door, check a thermostat setting or turn on home lighting. While at home, that owner could ask a Ford smartphone app what the car's remaining driving range is or even program a time to start the engine.
The voice commands issued at home would be routed through Amazon Echo, a free-standing speaker that interfaces with Alexa, Amazon's cloud-based virtual assistant, similar to Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana.
Information about the status of a homeowner's various Internet of Things devices would be provided through Wink, a venture between General Electric and Quirky. The latter has filed for bankruptcy and has announced it would be selling Wink, whose platform integrates IoT products from companies such as Nest, Philips Hue and Schlage.
"We working to see if we can come up with a product that we can commercialize," Ford CEO Mark Fields tells USA TODAY. Fields is expected to make a variety of company announcements Tuesday morning at CES. "The key is finding the right software protocols, so that the integrations with Amazon Echo and Alexa works. We'll aim to bring it to market as soon as possible."
As cars gradually become little more than rolling computers, automakers are furiously looking for ways to distinguish their brands. These days that means bragging not about horsepower and torque figures, but about connectivity and app integration. Fields acknowledges as much.
"The question we ask is, 'How do we make the Ford ownership experience sticky?' We think we have a holistic approach that is simply about making people's lives easier," he says. "This is just us aggressively accelerating the integration of our vehicles into the Internet of Things."
According to Gartner, some 21 billion IoT devices are expected to be online by 2020. Automakers, which traditionally lagged behind when it came to in-car electronics, are stepping up their efforts in the battle for buyers, who increasingly expect inside their cars the same smooth connectivity they experience at home.
That push has even led to some collaboration, as with the news Monday that Toyota is among a number of automakers adopting smartphone software technology developed by Ford, which it has shared openly in order to push for a unified in-car app platform.

Toyota may introduce petrol version of Innova, Fortuner

Toyota Kirloskar  Motor, Toyota's India unit plans to bring in the petrol version of its popular models Innova and Fortuner, considering the Supreme Court order on banning the sale of diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacity over 2000cc in Delhi-NCR region till March 31, 2016.
According to a report in The Economic Times, the company also plans to start manufacturing petrol versions of its future products, in case the ban is extended on vehciles with diffrent engine capacity.
TS Jaishankar, deputy managing director-commercial at Toyota Kirloskar Motor told ET that the company is exploring options to  bring the diesel versions of Innova and Fortuner.
Enquiries in Delhi have fallen since the ban was enforced. The NCR region accounts for 14 per cent of the company's sales.
The Supreme Court will hear a plea on Tuesday by Mahindra & Mahindra, Mercedes and Toyota seeking modification of its order prohibiting the sale and registration of diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of 2000 cc and above.

Ford Will Expand Self-Driving Test Car Fleet to 30

Ford Motor Co said Tuesday it plans to triple to 30 the size of its fleet of self-driving test cars as part of an effort to accelerate autonomous vehicle development.
In an announcement coinciding with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Ford said it will begin using a new, lower cost LiDAR sensor made by California-based Velodyne. The high cost of such sensors, which act as the eyes of a self-driving car, is one of the main technical obstacles to widespread commercialization of self-driving vehicles, industry executives say.
Ford said it will be the first automaker to use Velodyne's new solid state "hybrid Ultra PUCK Auto" sensor. The compact device replaces the spinning scanners mounted on the rooftops of some autonomous test vehicles. Ford said two of these sensors could replace four current LiDAR sensors. The Ultra PUCKs are small enough to mount on a side-view mirror, Ford said.
Ford said it will add 20 hybrid Ford Fusion sedans to its existing 10-vehicle self-driving car fleet, and test them on roads in California, Arizona and Michigan. Rival automakers are also testing fleets of self-driving cars on and off public roads. Alphabet Inc's Google has been testing self-driving cars of various kinds, including some of its own design, since 2009.
Separately, Ford said it is exploring ways to link in-home automation devices such as Amazon Inc's Echo to the Sync communications systems in its cars to allow consumers to control lights or thermostats inside the home from the car, or start up cars and check fuel levels from inside the house.
In a third technology-related move, Ford said it will collaborate with drone maker DJI to sponsor a contest to develop drone-to-vehicle communications systems using the connectivity systems on a Ford F-150. Contestants would design a system that United Nations workers can use to survey disaster areas, Ford said. The winner would get $100,000 (roughly Rs. 66 lakhs).

Samsung Portable SSD T3 With USB Type-C, Up to 2TB Storage Launched

Samsung has unveiled a new compact solid state drive, the Portable SSD T3, which comes in up to 2TB capacity. The new SSD also comes with a range of other features such as a USB Type-C connector and a shock-resistant metal case. The Portable SSD T3 will be up for display at the CES trade show event later this week.
The Portable SSD T3 is the successor to the last year's SSD T1, the company's first foray into the market. The biggest attraction of the Portable SSD T3 is its 2TB of storage. The T1 was offered in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB storage options. The other highlight of the Portable SSD T3 is the inclusion of USB Type-C port with the USB 3.1 specification. The company is offering a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable in the retail box.
The Samsung Portable SSD T3 houses a Samsung mSATA 850 Evo drive, which means that it has all of its features. The company claims that the SSD utilises its 3D-vertical NAND flash memory, which is capable of read/write speeds of up to 450MB/s.

Instagram Rolling Out '3D Touch Support' for Android

Instagram last month added the 3D Touch feature in its app v7.13.0. However, it later for a short time pulled the feature for unknown reasons. Now it appears as if the company has brought back the feature in v7.14.0 of the app, which is rolling out to users.
Support for 3D Touch allows users to use 'Peek and Pop' gestures based on the pressure applied on the screen of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. In the case of Android however, hard or soft presses will not bring up additional options - what with the paucity of Android phones with pressure sensitive displays.
With the help of 3D Touch feature on Android, Instagram now lets users tap and hold on an image thumb, which then expands and shows a preview along with the option to comment, like, and share. The image would shrink back to its thumb size once the user removes the finger from the display. Users can also drag their fingers to any of the three options and directly comment, share, and like the image all while in the preview mode. A simple tap on the image will open it full size like it does regularly. The latest version can be downloaded from Google Play.
Instagram also been testing multiple account support on its Android app, specifically, for users part of its beta programme.
The photo-sharing service had last month announced that its user base in India doubled over the last year. Instagram passed the 400 million user mark in September and had also claimed that it had over 80 million pictures shared daily.
Last month, according to an independent researcher named Wesley Wineberg, there are multiple vulnerabilities in Instagram, which if exploited, can give anyone complete control of the service. After informing to Facebook, the company offered him reward for disclosing one of the bugs but also contacted his employer and threatened him with legal action.

Samsung to release ground-breaking 3D sound system to deliver “Breathtaking Realism”

Samsung and Dolby partnership has led to the HW-K950 soundbar that bounce sound off the ceiling.

The quest for the best sound quality has led Samsung to partner with Dolby to develope an incredible piece of technology. The new system bounces sound waves off the ceiling and walls to deliver the best sound. Samsung’s HW-K950 soundbar is promising Dolby Atmos system with “3D” sound is supposed to deliver the best sound quality to home entertainment.
Usually used in the best theatre, the Dolby Atmos technology delivers optimal, dynamic rendering to loudspeakers. The system works by dropping sound on top of cinemagoers via ceiling-mounted speakers or upward-firing speakers. Samsung has adopted the latter in their new system (the upward-firing speakers). It has four speakers that shoot sound waves off the ceiling to deliver  better surround sound. Along with the soundbar there are also two independent speakers and a subwoofer. The two independent speakers and the soundbar bounce sound off the ceiling as well as shoot it out laterally to provide a traditional 5.1 sound system. With the soundbar and the two independent speaker offering nine sources of sound (not to mention the subwoofer) the new system is designed to deliver the best sound quality.
All the independent parts are connected wirelessly so it shouldn't be a hassle to setup and you don't need to worry about tripping on any pesky wires.

Apple iPhone sales in 2016 to crash, says analyst; but Apple could easily prove it wrong

Apple’s long profitable ride is expected to hit a speed breaker. A drop for the first time as much as six percent, said analyst Katy Huberty in a research note over at Morgan Stanley that has now turned into the talk of the tech town.
This prediction isn’t surprising given that iPad sales saw a dip for the first time, lack of new innovation (read Apple Watch) and the fact that the company’s record-breaking cash registers are ticking owing to iPhones. Huberty believes that iPhones will see 218 million sales mark in 2016 which is a 5.7 percent decline.
Getting to figures, the year 2015 ending September, Apple recorded iPhone sales of 231.11 million units that was up by 34 percent compared to 2014. Despite the upward trend so far, the analyst believes the iPhone sales may not be stronger, owing to saturation in international markets, the 2-year upgrade cycle normally seen with Apple users coupled with Apple’s revelation about 30 percent Android switchers (the largest ever) for last year. Well, the points are valid, but this may not necessarily mean Apple’s upswing days are numbered.
Along with its premium, cutting-edge products, there’s ‘one more thing’ that gives Apple an edge over competitors – a loyal fan-following. So, the brighter side is Apple doesn’t have to worry about attrition or retaining costumers, and rather focus on adding more numbers to this loyal list. As Huberty points out saturating markets is the prime concern, but the company knows it better than all of us.
Firstpost-iPhone-5s-size-comparison-6s-6s-plus
Apple has swiftly moved from launching one model to two, and likely to launch three models of the iPhone in 2016. The expanding portfolio of iPhone clearly reveals that the company is poised to take its money minting iPhone to different price segments.
Unlike others, Apple hasn’t tapped on the potential of emerging markets like India. The company failed at building the cheaper iPhone 5c and the latest iPhone 6s models didn’t really take off due to sky rocketing prices. The company rather realise that India is a large market but an emerging one that swears by ‘value for money’ devices. By value for money, we don’t mean cheap and the fact that iPhone 5s was received better than the 5c will vouch for it. The company is playing along a similar game of keeping the prices for latest device high and slashing the prices of the older products. For instance, the iPhone 5s recently got a massive price cut, but is it really worth the buy? This would remind some of us about how the iPhone 4s was considered the best selling Apple device in India even after generation of leaps.
With the new device that is reportedly set for March launch, the company could possibly change this. The company’s alleged iPhone 7c – a mix of the iPhone 5s, 5c and 6s – will be positioned as a budget device and the company is likely to ship between 20 million and 30 million units by the end of the year, according to the chatter online. It is said to feature a 2.5D screen, along with a A9 processor, paired with 2GB RAM and dipped in gold, silver and black colour variants. If priced well, the company could reach out to the mid-rangers who will be willing to make the much required switch as Apple is considered a status symbol here.
Besides, the company has been gung-ho about the China market and over the time has learnt to not treat India as a trash bin. In the past we’ve seen Apple introduce buybacks, aggressive advertisements and more. In fact, it surpassed the 1 billion mark in India, wherein it doesn’t enjoy a good market share. Apple has become more flexible and open in the last couple of years. It has learnt to adopt and re-strategise, putting behind some stringent statements it made in the past. If the iPhone is driving force for revenue, then a well-priced iPhone for emerging markets will take its numbers further sky rocketing. The numbers Apple has been achieving by mere two models compared to the scores of Androids available there is commendable.
With Samsung’s sales sliding off a slippery slope, it is quite possible that there will be a fair number of switchers this year too, unless Samsung pulls out a device that will give others a run for its money. Moreover, the number of users adopting iPhone even after year ending September figures has been growing by leaps and bounds. For instance, the survey by the Yahoo-owned analytics firm Flurry showed Apple accounted for 49.1 percent of smartphones and tablets activated over the Christmas week, compared to 19.8 percent for South Korean rival Samsung. A lot had been said and written about Apple has a ‘falling empire ‘ after Steve Jobs death, but the company under the leadership of Tim Cook rose above all odds and turned profitable than ever before.
